Branding of BERG

Liked the simplicity, yet strong and edgy attitude to this branding. Brave use of colour with gold!

Christian Vögtlin (LSDK, http://www.lsdk.de) & Mark A. Milic (modularlab, http://www.modularlab.com), both based in Germany

Their words:
"The stylized imprint of a wine glass enfoldes the geometrical majuscule Letters of the Restaurants Name „BERG“, a reference to the owners reputation as a sommelier aswell as to the focus of the Restaurant. Main colours are a bright, vivid orange and a distinguished cool gray. Business cards and 500 invitations are refined with hand embossed gold foil stickers. Their envelopes are sealed with the emblem on a golden sealing wax. Menu and the list of beverages have a blind embossing on their wrapping which is made of Toile-du-Marais-Linen."

The Xperia Soda Stunt

Another brilliant stunt, taking benefits of James Bond - very clever :)

"Agency CP+B organised the stunt to promote the Sony Xperia acro S, a waterproof smartphone. As the audience were going in to watch the film, they were offered a free fizzy drink, some of which contained a phone. A specially-made ad then explained what was going on.." - Creative Review

Brother Printer Orchestra, behind the scenes

Love.

"Behind the scenes of Brother Printer Orchestra - introducing Print 3.0. The next generation of printer technology, from Brother. To launch their new state-of-the-art-printer, we decided to create a full-scale orchestra, made entirely out of discarded relics from the old world of printing. Printers, scanners, copiers, fax machines, modems, hard drives -- a scrapheap symphony, reprogrammed and rewired to perform Bob Dylan's "The Times They Are A-Changin'". Because the old world of printing has come to an end. And this is their swansong." - BrotherEU

Magic!

A heartwarming commercial created for Norwegian Widerøe Airlines, telling a story of the relationship between an adorable grandson and his playful grandfather.
Great timing with the music, very good choice of characters and very well shot.

Random inspiration from London

Milly and I went down to London centre on Saturday to do live research on Redchurch Street for a project, and on the way I "picked up" some other stuff as inspiration as well. Some random, some artistic, some design.
So I thought, why not share it here too?

Street artist (to the right) had just finished his art piece, so I thought "I'll take a picture of you, even though I don't know you or your art". I didn't actually think that, but he was standing in the way of his piece and I was in a rush so I had to include him... I did really like his piece tho! Don't know who the guy to the left is.

I really enjoyed this packaging / editorial design! A very nice touch with the bag.

Art piece by Giuseppe Penone at Whitechapel Gallery

Looks like a chopped tree layered with gold on the inside, right? The whole thing is actually made out of bronze.
"Guiseppe Penone (b.1947) has created an ambitious bronze sculpture which invites us to rethink the relationships of sight and touch, outdoors and indoors, nature and the city." - Whitechapel Gallery

Say what..?
Don't know what kind of inspiration this would give.. but I liked the randomness.

 Nice packaging design.

The Real Bears

A little long awareness campaign, but it is charming (?! in a way...) and different. I also liked the simple illustrations.

"Coke has used animated polar bears for many years in its advertising. In the film, which features a track by Jason Mraz, The Real Bears make reference to some of the problems associated with excessive fizzy drink consumption, including tooth decay, the onset of diabetes and even erectile dysfunction. (...)

Bogusky told USA Today that "You know the American diet has gone the wrong way when it's considered normal to drink massive amounts of liquid candy. This is a cultural wake-up call." A Coca-Cola spokesperson responed thus: "This is irresponsible and the usual grandstanding from CSPI." - Creative Review

Amazing 3D mapping on Prague's Astronomical Clock

Do you have 10 minutes?? Watch this.
This is truly an amazing piece of art/design work! Can't belive it has "only" 49400 views?! Fantastic how they have integrated the 3D mapping with the church.
Tip: Watch full screen.

A little info:
Mapping during 600 years anniversary of the astrological tower clock situated at Old Town Square in center of Prague. This elaborated Astronomical Clock was constructed in 1410.

Tall Painting

Wow.
Sometimes I like things that don't need an explanation, a message, a meaning. Just pure fascination. And pretty to look at. And so, so simple!!

Be a drama queen or eat Snickers. Your choice.

I have to admit, I haven't been watching much TV this year. Maybe a good thing? But sometimes this makes me miss out on really good stuff, like this ad for Snickers. Maybe you have already seen it and think "She is so yesterday! I've seen that ages ago!" Oh well, I don't give a sh** about that :) I have now seen it, and I loved it!! So much truth and humour in this one - which to me are the greatest "weapons" in ads. Great work! And great inspiration.
Sadly, Snickers doesn't really make you full, but I guess ads rarely sell truthful products anyway..
I only hope I am not too much of a drama queen when I am hungry...

MTV - Green Picks Recycle Machine

Noticed that most of your (credit++)cards have expiration dates? And I guess you throw them away when they are expired, don't you?
MTV found a sollution for those cards. They have created an installation named 'Green Picks Recycle Machine', so you can create your very own "Gold-Mastercard-pick" or "Gym-member-card-pick" or "Cake-society-member-card-pick" or "Mensa-member-card-pick" or, or....

Such a good idea! If you play guitar or know someone who does.
Heeeey, idea for Christmas gifts.. hehe..

People in Need

'The Dutch charity organization Mensen in Nood (people in need) hits the streets with a remarkable campaign. People in need are posing with the typical attributes of consumer culture. The price of a designer handbag (€32) is compared with the price of a whole week of food (€4), The price a pint of beer (€4.50) with the price of 50 liter clean water (€1.50). The pictures were taken by Swedish fashion photographer Carl Stolz.' - Occupy Design UK

What do I think about it..
To me this is one of those moments I think advertising is both great and important. Charity ads are so easily being all the same 'see how horrible this looks/is, support us!'-campaign and sadly it is so easy to get sick and tired of them and just walk past them thinking "I know about that, I have seen that before". It is really sad too to admit I feel that way as I would really like to help. But I do believe I am not the only one...(??) And therefor it is so important in these cases to capture the viewer, make them stop and look at it and be "surprised". Show them what they know but in a way they haven't thought of before, and most importantly: Do it in a way so the viewer can relate to it.

And that is what I think the people behind this campaign have achieved. They have done something different. They have challenged our view of "normal", everyday commercials and the spotless models presented in these, and given us an uncomfortable realisation of what we have of goods compared to what other people in this world do.

Beware! The insects will spy on you!

I just spotted this new thing being shared on Facebook, and had to search it up.

Apparantly someone has created an insect spy drone, and the United States Government are now testing it out. Further it is described to be able to
"...be flown overhead to conduct audio and video surveillance. They can also land on a human being as if it were a mosquito. It can then take a clandestine DNA confiscation from the human source. Some speculate it may even be able to implant a chip into the skin. Although that would be difficult to do without the source knowing."

If this "bug" is "real" I am very impressed with the technology. And it looks amazing! On the other hand I am also very frightened of what this thing can do and how it can be misused by the "wrong people". I already hate mosquitos (I believe I'm not the only one), and this thing makes me even more eager to smash every mosquito, or mosquito-like-creature. Paranoid? Me? Not at all..

Mehmet Ali Uysal

"Turkish artist Mehmet Ali Uysal puts a new spin on man’s relationship with nature with his giant wooden clothes peg in Chaudfontaine Park in Belgium." - sourced from Saatchi Gallery's  facebook page .

Ceci n'est pas un moustache

It is a great, playful, humoristic packaging design that suits the product so well. And great to see designers using their illustration skills too sometimes.

"This humoristic packaging offers the function of assembling two products (two paintbrushes) together with only one cardboard printed on both sides. One paintbrush is a big one and the other is a small one for finishing touches. Once it’s folded, the package has two possibilities: 1. Protecting paintbrushes while you carry them on. 2. Support paintbrushes when it’s filled with paint. Each paintbrush has been named and linked to a size number to identify them. The natural hairs of some paintbrush have been dyed. A paintbrush wall support is offered after you bought the product in order to keep you workspace clean and organized."

'POP! ZINE FAIR' on Kingston University!

What an -amazing- day we had on Friday at Knights Park campus! What happened? We at BA Graphic Design, 1st years, arranged our first Zine fair - and what a fair! The theme was 'party' and it was called 'POP!' With a huge bunch of helium balloons, a candy floss machine, nail polishing and a big group of excited graphics students this fair was just as awesome as it could be - or actually, I think it went beyond all our expectations!

The awesome, pink candy floss machine!

And the nailpolishing station :)

A copy of each of our zines were layed out on tables (and some were hanging in the balloons) for everyone to see and read.

Me and Hamish Ryde next to our zines: 'Killing time'

 Woohoo!

The money we earned from the sales of zines, candy floss and nail polishing is going to be used for our final year show.

Layors of wire

While procrastinating (I think I can be excused as long as it is related to art and design..) I was introduced to this amazing artist.

Korean based artist Seung Mo Park works with wires and creates photographic art pieces that, for me, takes photography to a new level. By working with layored wire (with only few centimeters apart), he cuts out bits by bits to bring out the lighter parts, and from that create depth.
Although he uses a projection of the image he’s trying to replicate, as reference, the precision with which he cuts each little piece of wire mesh is nothing short of impressive.
Wow.

How he works (watch from 1:45):
